The City of Los Angeles Advisory Council on Aging (CoA) is a group of volunteer leaders that are mandated under the Older Americans Act to help the Department of Aging achieve their mission of improving the quality of life, independence, health and dignity of the city’s Older Adults.
In an advisory capacity to the General Manager of LADOA; members of the advisory council are required to commit to the following responsibilities and duties:
• Supporting LADOA in its mission to improve the quality of life, to improve the quality of life, independence, health and dignity of the City’s seniors and family caregivers by advocating for their needs, and providing community-based programs that are comprehensive, coordinated and accessible.
• Gaining familiarity with LADOA’s operations, activities and programs, and participation in orientation and training opportunities.
• Regular attendance at advisory council meetings, and participation on committees, as required.
• Advising the Department of Aging on matters related to its Area Plan development, goals and objectives
• Acting as liaison between seniors in the local community and LADOA; communicating their needs and issues, and providing reports and advocacy, based thereon.
•Promotion of LADOA within the local community, including participation in events and activities.
• Participation in special projects, such as, including public hearings, review of Requests for Proposals (RFPs), and Older Americans Month and Caregiver Month Events
• Relationships building and networking with multipurpose senior centers, senior/caregiver advocacy groups, non-profits, agencies and organizations, as appropriate.
• Visiting assigned Multipurpose Senior Center, at least, once per year.
• Identifying useful information and resources for seniors and family caregivers.
• Keeping up-to-date with local and national news pertaining to senior and family caregiver issues.
